In terms of inspirations for my take, there’s something about Zero that felt akin to the actor Toshiro Mifune, so there might be a bit of him in there if I did it right. So I felt that understanding the tone of the series, its sort of spirit, was important. There’s such a history, expectation and such a fanbase that you’re part actor, part curator. Usually, if I’m doing something based on an existing character - like a play or something from a book - I’m of the “never watch the movie” mind, but this was stepping into an existing pop cultural mantle.

Related to the last question, I watched as much of the series as I could (and of course Mamoru Miyano’s work). How did you prepare yourself for the role of Zero? Did you have any influences or inspirations for your voice work?

But getting the role of course made me curious, so I dove into the series’ history and became a fan by proxy. I was raised on pop culture and nerd culture, but like lots of Americans, I could only recognize the original ‘66 Ultraman by sight before we went into Ginga S and X (the first two movies we did). Were you familiar with the Ultraman franchise before portraying Ultraman Zero in the Ultraman Ginga S (2015) and Ultraman X (2016) films? Just before accepting the offer, it was revealed to me that the project was Ultraman. and then approved by the people at Tsuburaya in Tokyo. We had to do quite a few rounds of recorded auditions, which first had to be approved by the folks in L.A. Like lots of regular auditions, I recall it was remote - I submitted to the online casting, which was very secretive and just said something like “Japanese Superhero Movie,” with a voice recording. How did you get the offer to become the English dubbed voice of Ultraman Zero?

Did my first professional dinner theatre for $139 a week in Mayfield, KY and haven’t stopped since.

When people said, “you should major in this,” I remember that I hadn’t even realized such a thing was an option. I started acting in plays in college (the first of my family to go, on a government dime) because they were there to do. It wasn’t until my senior year of high school that the students themselves put on a play in the library. I had wanted to act since I was four years old, but the schools in the South didn’t have much in the way of performing arts programs - all the money and focus went to sports. How did you start your career in the entertainment industry?īeing raised in a rural area - and growing up poor - it was alway the intent, but never a real option. I’ve been at this full-time for about 10 years, making a living as a working-class actor, writer and sometimes producer (usually on accident) in indie film, TV, commercials, video games, theatre and audio. I’m a Kentucky-raised creative currently residing in - shockingly - Los Angeles. Thanks for having me, Abel, I appreciate it. Please start off by introducing yourself and sharing a bit of your background to the readers. Thank you for taking the time to conduct this interview with the Distant Planet Land blog.

Daniel returned to voice Zero again in Zero’s original film trilogy, which includes Mega Monster Battle Ultra Galaxy: The Movie (2009), Ultraman Zero: Revenge of Belial (2010), and Ultraman Saga (2012). Both of these films were released for a limited theatrical run as a double feature in North America back in January 2017. Daniel voiced Zero in several recent Ultraman films such as Ultraman Ginga S: The Movie (2015) and Ultraman X: The Movie (2016).
